Frequently asked questions

A few things you might be wondering about (or what I think you may be thinking about).

Whether you're completely new to breathwork or have experienced it before, here are some of the questions that tend to come up.

General

What is breathwork?

Breathwork is an umbrella term for practices that intentionally change or bring awareness to the way we breathe.

Some practices are slow and calming. Others use a more active breathing rhythm. Some take only a few minutes, while others form part of a longer facilitated session. What they have in common is simple: instead of leaving the breath entirely on autopilot, we work with it deliberately.

What is Embodied Breathwork?

The practice I am trained in is Embodied Breathwork, a form of Conscious Connected Breathing taught by the Embodied Breath Academy.

It uses a continuous, connected breathing rhythm while bringing attention to what is happening in the body.

The practice isn't only about how you breathe. It is also about what you notice: physical sensations, tension, thoughts, emotions and whatever else might arise during the experience.

There isn't a particular experience you're supposed to have.

Do I need any experience with breathwork?

Not at all. I'll explain the practice and what to expect before we begin. You don't need to know how to breathe in a particular way beforehand or have any experience with meditation, yoga or breathwork.

What might I experience during a session?

Everyone's experience is different, and even your own experience can vary from one session to another.

You might notice changes in physical sensations, temperature, tingling, tension or relaxation. Thoughts, memories or emotions may arise. Some people have a very physical or emotional experience; others experience something much quieter.

There isn't a particular outcome we're trying to create.

Part of the practice is simply noticing what is happening as you breathe.

How long is a 1:1 session?

Allow approximately 90 minutes for each session.

I don't like to rush the experience, so the 90 minutes isn't a strict start-to-finish timer. It gives us time to settle in, talk before we begin, move through the breathwork itself and allow time afterwards to gradually return and reflect.

Some sessions may finish a little earlier, while others may need a little more time. I recommend setting aside up to two hours so you don't have to rush off immediately afterwards.

Where are in-person sessions held?

In-person 1:1 sessions are held at an agreed venue in Singapore. Venue details will be confirmed before your session

What should I wear?

Anything comfortable that allows you to breathe and rest easily. You don't need special clothing or equipment. I'll let you know beforehand if there is anything specific you need to bring for your session.

Is breathwork the same as meditation?

Not quite. Both can involve awareness and attention, but breathwork involves deliberately working with the way you breathe.

Embodied Breathwork can also be a more active and physical experience than many forms of meditation.

Is breathwork scientifically supported?

There is a growing body of research exploring deliberate breathing practices and their relationship with areas such as stress, anxiety and emotional wellbeing.

Breathwork is a broad term and different studies investigate different breathing techniques, durations and populations. So I prefer to be careful about treating all forms of breathwork as though they are the same.

I'm interested in both the research and the lived experience of the practice, and I try to be clear about the difference between the two.

Safety

Is breathwork safe for everyone?

Not every breathwork practice is appropriate for every person. Conscious Connected Breathing can create significant physiological and emotional changes during a session, which is why I take screening and preparation seriously.

Before participating, you'll complete a simple health questionnaire. This helps me understand whether the practice is appropriate for you or whether we need to discuss anything further before proceeding.

Are there contraindications?

Yes. Certain medical, physical or psychological circumstances can mean that Conscious Connected Breathing is not appropriate, requires modification, or should only be undertaken with appropriate medical clearance.

These can include certain cardiovascular, neurological, respiratory and psychiatric conditions, pregnancy, recent surgery and other significant medical circumstances.

You'll receive the relevant information before your session and complete a health screening questionnaire. If you're uncertain about whether breathwork is appropriate for you because of a medical condition, please speak with your healthcare professional before participating.

What if I'm pregnant?

Some forms of breathwork may not be appropriate during pregnancy, so please let me know before booking or participating. I may ask you to obtain medical clearance, modify the practice or recommend that you don't participate in Conscious Connected Breathing.

What if I have an existing medical condition?

Please tell me during the health screening process. Depending on the condition and the type of practice, I may ask you to obtain medical clearance, modify the practice or recommend that you don't participate in Conscious Connected Breathing.

Safety takes priority over completing the session.

1:1 Embodied Breathwork

What happens before my first session?

Before we meet, you'll receive information about the practice, what to expect and a simple health screening questionnaire.

At the beginning of our session, we'll also have time to talk. You can ask questions, tell me anything you'd like me to know and settle in before we begin.

Why do you offer 1:1 breathwork as a 3- or 8-session journey?

I prefer working together over a series of sessions rather than treating breathwork as a one-off experience. No two sessions necessarily feel the same. Having more than one gives you time to become familiar with the practice, notice what comes up for you and explore it without expecting everything to happen in a single session.

You can choose a 3-session journey or an 8-session journey depending on how much time and space you'd like to give yourself.

Do I have to know what I want to work on?

No.You might arrive with something particular on your mind, or you might simply be curious about the practice.

You don't need to manufacture an intention or arrive with something that needs to be "fixed".

Private groups, teams & events

Can you facilitate breathwork for private groups?

Yes. Private sessions can be designed for couples, families, friends or small groups. The format will depend on the group, setting and participants.

Do you offer corporate breathwork sessions?

Yes. Sessions can be designed for teams, workplace wellbeing programmes, leadership offsites and retreats.

We'll discuss the group, setting and purpose beforehand so that I can recommend an appropriate format.

I'm attending a breathwork session organised by my company. How should I prepare?

If you're attending a session organised by your company, you'll receive information on what to expect, how to prepare and answers to frequently asked questions through your company's pre-session communications.

Can breathwork be incorporated into an event?

Yes. Not every event needs a full Embodied Breathwork session. I can also facilitate shorter breathing experiences designed to sit naturally within a conference, retreat, wellness day or wider event programme.
